Baby it's cold outside..................(Winter Precautions for your plants)

As the famous lines remind us........ Yes it is cold outside during those winter months.
Here are some tips for you when ordering your new little living creatures are are located in a colder climate.
Air plants are cold sensitive.
They do fine with shipping however they hate to be left outside during this time of year.
Here in sunny southern Florida we rarely deal with the cold. Do your due diligence and check your weather during the colder month before you order. When you order and if it is snowing or below 40 degrees in your area make sure to make your postal woman or man aware that you are waiting on a package that is cold sensitive. Work out with them a warm place to leave them. Maybe a neighbor or someplace warm where they will not freeze.
Not even sure what your postal worker looks like.........
Leave a note telling them exactly where to leave your new little creatures to keep them happy and healthy.
To help your new little additions during their trip add a heat pack to keep them toasty during their travel. Heat packs help with the trip however if left outside there are no amount of heat packs that will save your new plants.

Small Side note. Now that it is starting to get colder in many areas we ship to make sure you have a warm spot for your post to put your Twisted Acres package when it arrives. Our plants do great during shipping but make arrangements for them to be put in a safe spot once they arrive to avoid them getting too cold.

Ionanthas and a Little Care

A little info about Ionantha air plants (aka Iona's) and some care tips.

Air Plant Iona 3 for 1 Deal

Tillandsia Ionantha aka Iona
Native to Cosa Rica Mexico

Ionas are a smaller variety of air plants they range when mature from 1-3"
Iona's only flower once in their entire life cycle and change to a vibrant red towards maturity. This color change is only temporary and happens only once. Which is why we try to send them out green so the new owner can enjoy the color change and bloom.

Iona's start out green as juveniles
SALE Air Plant Mix of 5

As mentioned each Iona will only flower once. However once the flower has dried remove by gently plucking the petals and removing the stalk as this promotes babies (aka "pups")

Iona's are a clumping Variety of air plant and if you prefer not to remove the pups they will form massive clumps over time. As leaves dry gently pull them away from the base of the plant with sideways tugs. If the leaf resists it is not ready to be removed yet. The mother plant will stay a mother plant and you can pluck from her from the pups.

If you prefer to remove the pups wait until they are 1/3-1/2 the size of the mother plant to ensure their longevity. Hold both mother and pup at their base and gently twist in a downward motion. If the pup is hard to remove you may want to remove the pup by cutting downward as close to the mother as possible. Most will only need a gentle twist and tug to remove. Do not discard the mother plant yet. As long as she is still alive she will continue to produce more pups. The mother will often take several years after blooming before she finally dies.

Quick care tips. Make sure you water your plant regular. Yes these plants are easy care but they still need regular watering. Water is the most important aspect of succeeding with your Iona. However too much water and they will rot. Never leave air plants in standing water for long periods of time. Environment dictates everything with care. Your plant needs water regularly at least 1 times per week to start and submerge your plant in room temp water for a min to a couple. If you notice brown tips then mist your plant in between its weekly soaking. They need to be watered underneath as well as on top. The easiest way to achieve this is to actually immerse the whole plant in the sink, bucket or cup if possible. After submerging make sure to shake off excess water and let them dry out. Also lighting is very important. Ionas like a bright indirect light to help them achieve their brightest color change and also bloom a little quicker. If in flower keep the bloom above water. In extreme dry areas or homes with air conditioning your iona may need more water.
Thin leaf varieties may need spritzing more often on the leaves to help the tips from not drying out.  If you miss a watering air plants are very forgiving and are a very hardy plant. Email us anytime with questions on care or to help you develop a care schedule for your environment.

So Enjoy your little ones and get creative!! Until the next post happy gardening!!

Globe Air Plant Hanging Terrarium Clear Glass Orb Kit with Moss, rock or sand

Tuesday, August 6, 2013

Welcome!!!

Welcome to Twisted Acres new blog.

Well I think it is time Twisted Acres branched off and created a site dedicated completely for our creations, plants, events, specials, new products, tips, tricks and so much more.
Lucky Globe Air Plant Hanging Terrarium Clear Glass Orb KitHanging Sea Urchin Planter Single Kit
We have truly been very fortunate in growing our business and greatly appreciate serving each and everyone of our customers. You guys have been amazing and we can't move forward without you.

Let me start this new site by introducing the ones behind the emails ..................
Anson the one with all the knowledge about our plants has worked with plants for over 16 years. They are his life and his passion. Years back Anson had his own large plant business in Charlotte County. Hurricane Charlie destroyed much of what Anson had built up over the years. Soon after that a declining economy pushed Anson's business to the edge and he had to start over but has never given up on his love of gardening and plants. He is a wealth of information when it comes to plants. So much that he still surprises me when he spouts off about random plants we find or see.

I(Alisha) had worked in floral shops for over 15 years. (See the connection here? This is how we met)Due to the economy I also had to find a different path when the floral shop I worked with shut it's doors. I love working with my hands and creating art through many subjects whether it be paint, pencil, cloth or organic materials. I am an art addict. I am addicted to creating and can't and will never stop EVER!! When I am not helping you I am helping over 200 tiny individuals learn how to create art in my classroom. And when I am not helping them I am locked in my studio most likely painting something brightly colored.

Twisted Acres is a collaboration and a dream. Anson and I (Alisha) have joined forces and created Twisted Acres. Two individuals who believe in products that are recycled, organic, user friendly, colorful and so much more. This has been a long dream and has taken its first baby steps. Twisted Acres has a long way to go but it all starts here. It's a dream of organic farming and art twisting together to create a one of a kind environment.

Our biggest news is on July 26th after 8 years Anson proposed under a waterfall!!!!

So now we are for sure together forever building our dream. We thank you so much for joining us along the way and can't wait for what adventures are to come as we grow. Welcome to our new blog where we will be posting what shows, events and farmers markets we will be a part of. Tips, tricks and ideas about caring and displaying your air plants. Sales and specials, new items and much much more.

**** Also I express myself way better with a paint brush so ignore all grammatical errors. I apologize profusely now for butchering the English language. You can check out my art at www.koyaniskreations.com
